I would like to find out as much as possible about this station. A friend of mine has a caravan at this site and by chance her Father who has just passed away served here. As a result of a conversation I offered my services to try and find out about this station so she can learn more about where her dad was stationed.

Does anyone have information on this station or if not do you know where I can start looking for info on this Early warning station.

thanks in advance

regards Scott

Hi Scott

R.A.F. Station Drone Hill, Berwickshire was one of the original Twenty Station CH chain. CH stands for Chain Home. It was an 'East-Coast Type' of CH station and used the A.M.E.S. (Air Ministry Experimental Station) Type 1 air defence radar system.

The radar station was flanked by Cockburnspath (a Chain Home Low) site to the north and to the south by Bamburgh, also a CHL station. Both of these stations were added between September 1939 and July 1940. The entire system played a prominent role during the Battle of Britain. I do not have a whole lot more to add other than the following station gen.

Name -

R.A.F. Station Drone Hill, Berwickshire

Postal Address -

Coldingham, Berwickshire

Telephone Number -

Granthouse 221 and Reston 15

Transport Facilities -

Reston, L.N.E.R. 4 miles (passengers and goods), thence by service transport. 30 carat weight crane. Weighbridge, 4 ton (carat weight)

I hope this is a good start for you.

Cheers...Chris

Thanks Chris thats a great start. All I could get on the net was that it was Chain Home and nothing else.
