Hi

British and Commonwealth WW2 campaign medals were issued un-named unless W/Com Whitley's DSO or DFC form part of the medal group these being named and dated there is no positive way of identification.

245 squadron pilots were not awarded the Battle of Britain bar to their 1939-45 star tho' pilots were involved in the battle.

W/Com EW Whitley's biography is shown on the B of B web site.

I tried finding these medals on ebaay but no luck so I hope this helps

I reviewed the e-Bay listing a very impressive medal group and documentation.

I still question his eledgability to the Battle of Britain clasp as he was CO of 245 squadron stationed at Aldergrove Northern Ireland from July 20th 1940 untill July 1941.To be entittled to the clasp its not if he participated in the battle but had to be on the strength of a qualified squadron which 245 was not.

Regards John

Dear Ian,

I cannot tell you much directly but I can point you to a book called "A Clasp for the Few", by Kenneth Wynn. This book listed all New Zealanders who were awarded the BoB clasp and contained comprehensive biographies.

He is also probably mentioned in one of the official three volumes, entitled "New Zealanders in the Royal Air Force" by W/C Thompson.

Regards

Rod
