Hello One & All,

does anyone know what the abbreviation "F.M.E." stands for?

It seems to be a description of an R.A.F. ground trade. Specifically it relates to an air gunner who remustered under this trade after being taken off flying duties at the end of the war.

Thanks

Rod

Hi Rod,

Both are correct.

It depends on the time frame.

Early in the war it was FME amd FMA

Flight mechanic engines and

Flight mechanic airframes

then as the trade specs grew they became

Electrical

Airframes

Instrument

etc

Ross

Dear Ross,

thanks for that clarification. In this instance, it was in 1945, just after the war. The person concerned was an air gunner recovering from injuries incurred as a P.o.W. and he trained at No. 12 S.T.T. In 1946, he reverted to flying status as an air gunner.

Rod

Hello Rod

I would not dispute what Ross has told you - F.M.E in 1946 was Flight Mechanic Electrical. If you go to this Web Site http://www.ten-forward.demon.co.uk/melksham/ you could get confirmation from the Webmaster.
