Can anyone provide a list of serial numbers and the fates of the Whitley Mk IIIs used by 7 Sqn RAF in 1938/39. I have traced all of the Mk IIs but can find nothing on the Mk IIIs ?

Hi Tom

No. 7 (B) Squadron only used the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk.III from November 1938 to May 1939. They converted to the Handley Page Hampden Mk.I during April and May of 1939.

The squadron’s code at the time was ‘LT’. It was issued during the Munich Crisis but does not appear to have been used until November 1938.

The only Mk.III serial numbers I could come up with are:

K8962

K8964

K8970

I suggest that you find yourself a copy of Air Britain (Historians) Limited's publication 'Royal Air Force Aircraft K1000 to K9999.'

Tom,

Or, better still, Air-Britain's later volume, 'The K File: The Royal Air Force of the 1930s', pub 1995.

Cheers,

Errol
