I have just seen the 1964 movie in regard this squadron and as an American played the lead I am interested in the accuracy of the story. My interest in English history has largely been confined to the 12 century backwards but htis tragic story has appeal in the same way as the spartans at Thermopolae in Greece

Sorry plaw, 633 Sqdn did not exist. As far as I know it is just fiction and not based on any factual mission - but I stand to be corrected. Good film and great music though.

I'm afraid the story is fiction though much of it has a ring of truth about it. The film was largely filmed in the Western Highlands of Scotland - I can remember the Mosquitos flying around the Arisaig area when I was on holiday there at the time. The aircraft were based at Dalcross and I think an Anson was used by the film company.
