I have, and am researching, a collection of medals, attributed to Pilot Officer James Cecil William Hewetson RAFVR, consisting of 1939-1945 Star, Aircrew Europe Star, Aircrew Africa Star and Bar, and War medal with M.I.D.

He was posted to 39 Squadron in Malta flying Beauforts on 12th June 1942 and died on 25th February 1943. I have a photograph of him showing Flight Sergeants stripes.

I have tried all the normal channels but not being a relative Iím not having any luck with any pre posting to Malta history. Has anyone come across him pre 12/6/1942 in their research?

Any help or info gratefully received.

P/o 'Jimmy'Hewetson was a Rohdesian.I have a photograph of him with other members of his beaufort crew taken on 6/11/42 taken at Gianaclis[Egypt]en route to Malta[from Shallufa Egypt].

I am in contact with the wireless operator of his crew A.J.Coles.

I have a desciption of the circumstances of his loss He went down with his aircraft after ditching the rest of the crew survived to become POWs.

How did you come by the medals?

Nick.

The rest of Hewetsons crew were

Sergeant.A.J.Coles w/op.ASV/op [still living]

Flight Sgt.A.L."Jimmy"Brice Gunner. from Oxfordshire.

Sergeant R."joe"Bradford.Gunner.From Burton on Trent

I am very sorry but I do not have service numbers or the number of the aircraft.

The aircraft was a mk2[a] Beaufort

The three sergeants were picked up by the Italian torpedo boat "Monsone"

Imprisoned in Campo PG66 near Naples. Were separated before the fall of Italy, then reunited in Stalag IV At Mulhlburg Germany.

Liberated by the Russians 23 April 1945.

Hi Nick,

The ORB and Sgt Coles account lists F/Sgt Bryce as Observer.

The aircraft was DD910.

Regards

Ross

Hi Ross/Nick,

I had this serial (DD910)in my data base but with only one name: Sgt William B. RICHARDS, 1263952, Malta Memorial Panel 9 Column 1. (Date 26/02/43).

Only could find PoW-info on A.J. COLES (1187358 - 4B/227089). There is a A.R. BRICE (1577795 - L7/7). However with Hewetson, Coles, Brice, Bradford and Richards there is a crew of five. I think something is not correct. But what ?

Regards,

Henk.

HENK

I have checked the spelling of Brice and its correct. The initials are according to Roy Nesbits book, A L not A R.

Richards does not feature in Sgt Coles version of the event.

I am going to phone Mr Coles to check aircraft number.I have not done this earlier I dont like to bother him to much.

I will post the result later I hope.

all the best

Nick
