Hi,

Can anyone add further details to two collisions involving 23 Sqn Demons.

27/8/31 K1951 and K1954 involved in mid air collision. Both aircraft landed safely. The collision occured near Kenley.

3/11/38 K5712 and K5730 collided in formation. Both aircraft abandoned. K5712 near Barholm, Stamford and K5730 near Uffington, Lincs. One of the crew from K5730 was killed.

K5712 and K5730 were both turret Demons.

If anyone can help with crew names and possibly which aircraft they were flying I would be grateful.

Info from the 'K' File.

Thanks in advance.

Alex

Alex,

From p430 of 'Flight' of 10 Nov 38:

"A/C.I Harold Roy Lee lost his life as the result of a collision in the air which occurred near Uffington, Lincs, on November 3 between two aircraft of No.23 (Fighter) Squadron, Wittering, Northants. Sgt Jack Arnold Bullard was the pilot and A/C.I Lee the occupant of one aircraft and P/O Arthur Edward Slocombe was the pilot and sole occupant of the other aircraft. The two pilots were not injured."

Hi Errol,

Many thanks for the info. From what you gave me I can place which crew were on which Demon.

I know from observing previous threads that there are pilot lists for the various squadrons. How do you go about obtaining said lists?

I sort of know my way around the PRO and have only started to tap into the RAF Museum and the Air Historical Branch. My problem is that I can't get to these places so I have to order by mail or internet. Some of the time I'm ordering blind in the hope that what I have ordered is what I need. It works 90% of the time.

Thanks again.

Alex

Alex,

Complete or near complete sets of the standard Air Force Lists are held by the AHB, PRO and RAF Museum. (see also http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/5586.html#13

for reference to Confidential Air Force Lists).

The AHB is not open to general access by the public. I think that the PRO held Lists are only accessible through personal visit or a researcher acting on one's behalf and am uncertain if photocopying of them is permited. Possibly the RAF Museum would accede to a photocopying request by mail?

Squadron lists of officers appear in the standard AFLs from April 1920 to March 1939 inclusive. I copy below a typical entry for those unfamiliar with the content (from the edition for March 1938):
