In Vol. 7 of BCL (top of page 193) is the report of the loss of Whitley V BD234 from 10 OTU.

I am interested in three of the crew

Sgt. W. Rose

Sgt. R.A. Wakeling

Sgt. W.F. Martin

I am fairly certain these are

1481165 Sgt. Wallace Rose

Sgt. R.A. Wakeling (S/No. not known)

1079614 Sgt. William Frederick Martin

and that they later joined 158 Squadron in October 1943 flying with Sgt. J.C.K. Webb. They flew one mission in each of the months of Oct/Nov/Dec '43 and Feb '44

Rose and Martin went with their skipper to 35 Sqn on 23/2/44 (and lost their lives on 22/3/44). I have nothing further on Wakeling (having done the usual LG and CWGC searches). The 158 ORB is silent on his movements (in or out that I can see) and has his initials as R.W. rather than R.A. as Chorley does.

He also seems to have flown as a Nav with 158 but his listing in Vol. 7 indicates Air Bomber. I suspect he and Rose were Nav/B as Rose seems to have flown in both seats on his missions with 158.

Can anybody help with the correct identitiy of Wakeling?

I'm not holding out much hope on this one

Cheers

Eddie

Eddie,

For what it is worth, his name does not appear in the Oct 46 edition of the AFL, so looks unlikely that he was ever commissioned.

Thanks Errol - at least that's closed one avenue.

Rene - My man was still alive in Feb 44 but thanks for checking.

There is a Robert Joseph Wakeling (189073) who was commissioned on 6/12/44. I'm just hopeful that I don't have to mess with yet anoth set of initials!
