Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I trying to discover if 109371 F/L Bernard James DOBSON D.F.C 17/10/44 44 Sqn Bar 16/2/45 617 Sqn.

Is the same Captain Bernard DOBSON who died in the Mount Fuji, Japan BOAC Boeing 707 crash 5th March, 1966 ?

I know F/L B.J Dobson was born in 1921, and Captain Dobson was 45 when he died in 1966 (1921) any ideas please.

Gratefully

Mark Haycock

Mark,

According to the report on the accident in The Times of 7 Mar 66 (still available for look up on free trial basis) - yes, the very same man: 'Captain Dobson flew with the renowned "Dam Busters" Squadron during the war and won the D.F.C. and bar."

Thank you again Errol !

Bernard Dobson was a pre war RAFVR pilot who completed a tour with 44 Sqdn between May-October 1944. He won his first D.F.C for a low level mining operation on the Swinemunde Canal 16/17/8/44. He flew with 617 Sqn 10/44-3/45 bombing the Tirpitz 12/11/44 !

By the time of the Mount Fuji crash, he must of been coming towards the end of his long flying career. After all his wartime experiences it seems so sad to die in crash over which he had no control.
