Hi,

I was wondering if anybody out there was able to supply me with some details about the service career of Bill Edrich (William John Edrich, 89346 (I think)) the English cricketer? I have herd that after completing a tour on Blenheims and receiving the DFC he was posted to 180 squadron. Can this be confirmed or denied?

Thanks for your help

Andrew

Andrew, From the LG re your man: 915263 LAC William John Edrich to be PO on prob (89346) wef 14 Dec 40, sny 6 Dec 40. FO w/s wef 14 Dec 41, sny 6 Dec 41. There is some conflict with dates for promotion to FL. The date given is 29 Oct 41, which, as you can see predates his promotion to FO! I could not find the Gazette entry awarding him the DFC, but at the time of his promotion to FO in Dec 41 he had already been awarded the medal.

Regards, Terry

Andrew, Conflicting dates or other info are not unusual, but are generally sorted out by a correcting entry. I couldn't find one in Edrich's case but will have access to hard-copy Gazettes next Tues and will have a look.

Regards, Terry

Andrew, Despite the apparent conflict over the dates of his promotion to FL, the Air Force Lists of Jul 43 & Jul 45 list his promotion to FL war substantive as 29 Oct 41. Herewith his ctation for the DFC which you will see is a collective citation for the one mission:

Air Ministry,

12th September, 1941.

ROYAL AIR FORCE.

The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallantry displayed in flying operations against the enemy: %97

On the morning of 12th August, 1941, Blenheim bombers carried out simultaneous attacks on the great power stations near Cologne. A strong force attacked the station at Knapsack, whilst a smaller force attacked two stations at Quadrath. These missions involved a flight of some 250 miles over enemy territory .which was carried out at an altitude of 100 feet. At Knapsack the target was accurately bombed and machine gunned from between 200 and 800 feet and at Quadrath both power stations were hit from the height of the chimneys; the turbine house at one of the two stations was left a mass of flames and smoke. The success of this combined daylight attack and the co-ordination of the many formations of aircraft depended largely on accurate timing throughout the flight. That complete success was achieved, despite powerful opposition from enemy ground and air forces, is a high tribute to the calm-courage and resolute determination displayed by .the following officers and airmen, who participated, in various capacities as leaders and members of the aircraft crews: %97

Distinguished Service Order.

Acting Wing Commander John Owen Cecil KERCHER %7B40544), No. 21 Squadron.
