Sgt (Airgunner) Norman Angus HARTRICK - R/224413 of 13 OTU was killed when his Mitchell FV986 crashed 24-7-1944 Hallams Lane, Chilwell, Nottinghamshire. He lies buried in the Stonefall Cemetery, Harrogate, Yorkshire.

It's said that four airmen were killed in this accident; one of them missing.

Who has the names on file of the remaining three airmen.

The missing man could have been:

W/O Allan COOK - RAAF 414907, who was 13 OTU and commemorated on Panel 259 of the Runnymede Memorial.

Regards,

Henk.

Henk,

Not an answer, but perhaps one or more of the following if there were other RCAF fatalities in that crash. All are RCAF, died same day as Hartrick and all buried Stonefall Cemetery.

None of them are identified with a squadron/unit other than RCAF on the CVWM.

All were reported "killed on active service" in RCAF casualty list #969, as was Hartrick in list #960. There is a photo of headstone for all of them including Hartrick

REYNOLDS, Albert Chalmers (A/G)

MOFFAT, Archibald Douglas (P)

LUDLOW, John Murray (A/G)

LEWTHWAITE, George Alexander (NAV)

DITTMER, Donald Franklin (A/B)

Cheers, Ken

Thanks Ken for your effort to answer my question. Unfortunately the names you gave were all killed on Halifax JD372.

The search continues !

Henk.

Henk,

Possibles:

F/O Ronald Frederick STEPHENS, RAAF. Buried in OXFORD (BOTLEY) CEMETERY. The Australian War Memorial says he was with 13 OTU.

Buried very near him is 2nd Lieutenant S H E CAPSTICK-DALE SAAF. Also died that date.

And also, F/O A M MONTGOMERY RAAF. However the AWM attributes his unit as "16 (P) Service Flg Trg School"

Potentially an unusual combination, SAAF, RCAF & RAAF in one aircrew?

Hope this helps,

Jim

Jim

Thought I remembered a name.

Capstick-Dale came up on the Airforce Deaths Yahoo group last year.

2/Lt Stanley Hall Elphinstone Capstick-Dale SAAF died 24.07.44 on TYPHOON JP847 of 3 TEU

Looks like he can be eliminated

Thanks Paul and Jim for your help. Important to know that F/O Stephens was 13 OTU as well. I never did before but asked for digital copies Australian Archives for Stephens and Montgomery.

Will inform through this board upon receipt.

Regards,

Henk.

Henk,

The list below, including the Australians we have already mentioned, is a list of names of casualties for that date that I don't yet have a unit for.

Perhaps others may be able to eliminate some?

Table is a bit messy, but it is Surname, Rank, Duty, Intials, Number, Service, Cemetery.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jim for info. To the list I can say:

McGregor, Rose, Harwood, Thompson and Tuff were all 42 OTU (must have been on a Whitley - also have them unaccounted for up to now)

Smith and Lyon were on Whitley BD230 of 42 OTU.

Hartrick on Mitchell FV986 of 13 OTU.

Montgomery and Stephens were 16 PFTS - have them unaccounted for.

Regards,

Henk.
