Who could inform me of the correct Lancaster serial number on which F/Sgt (Airgunner) Walter John KLEMENTOSKI, R/275494, was wounded during a raid on N%FCrnberg 16/17-3-1945. The aircraft landed safely at Manston; F/Sgt Klementoski died 21-3-1945 and lies buried in the Brookwood Mil. Cem., Woking, Surrey.

Thanks for your help,

Regards,

Henk.

Henk,

From the 550 Squadron ORB, all returning crews from the raid our are interested in mention the intensity of enemy fighter activity on this night. Flt/Sgt Klementoski was the Rear Gunner to Flt/Sgt Jamieson in Lancaster RA547, "BQ-D".

Thanks Greg, that the correct one. Allison in "They Shall Grow Not Old" mentioned R4457, a number never used.

Henk.

Hi Henk,

to expand on what Greg has written, AIR 14/3460 states that 550 Sqdn Lancaster RA547 ("D") sustained 7 hits by 20mm calibre ammunition following a fighter attack and was classified as Cat AC.

Cheers

Rod

Thanks for that extra info. Allison mentions: "Suffered severe FLAK (!) damage to the upper turret and near the port elevator".

Henk.

Hi Henk,

I've rechecked the Bomber Command ORS assessment and the aircraft is not listed as having suffered from flak damage on this night...

Cheers

Rod

Thanks Rod. Hits by 20mm calibre and damage to "upper" turret points in the direction of a fighter and not flak. Will inform Allison.

Regards,

Henk.

Hi Henk,

technically at least a pro-forma combat report should've been completed for this encounter. However, it seems that these are not at TNA...can anyone confirm the status of Bomber Command Suadron combat reports....the TNA files mostly end in 1944 so where are the 1945 reports?
