Post:
Looking for the aircraft serial (Mosquito ?) on which F/O (Nav) Alfred Alexander SHEPHERD, RCAF J/13948, of 418 Sqdn was killed 31-7-1943, and lies buried in the New Communal Cemetery, Clichy, Seine, France.

Pilot was P/O Norman COLE, RAAF 413964.

"They Shall grow Not Old" mentions serial HK808 but this number was never allotted to an aircraft.

Mosquito-file is of no help; file of P/O Cole not digitalized at the NAA.

Thanks for our help.

Henk.

Try HX808.

Years ago (when dinousars walked the earth) I posted a listing of No.418 Squadron aircraft. It seems that the website Archives will not regurgitate it. Can someone provide the link to said listing ? Or should I post it again ?

A list of aircraft dated 2 September 1943 shows it having the letter "F"; comparable lists dated 31 August 1944, 22 July 1944 and 3 January 1945 give the letter as "S" - clearly assigned following its absence from the squadron, April-May 1944.

HJ870 (Z) - Taken on strength, 19 February 1943 (first Mosquito delivered to No.418 Squadron). No date of transfer elsewhere. Letter given in ORB dated 19 February 1943.

NOTE: This was "Hairless Joe" flown by S/L Russ Bannock during time he destroyed eight enemy aircraft and 19 V-1s; see photographs PL-31295, PL-33522. Letter on list of squadron aircraft dated 31 August 1944.

HR151 (F) - Taken on strength from No.10 Movements Unit, 1 June 1944; to No.43 Group, 2 October 1944; returned to No.418 Squadron, 18 November 1944. HR179: - Taken on strength from No.27 Movements Unit, 27 May 1944; missing in action, 2/3 June 1944 (P/O R.J. Tomlinson killed). NOTE: a list of aircraft dated 22 July 1944 includes HR179 and assigns the letter "P". This is clearly an error; HR179 does not appear on list dated 3 August 1944.

HR183 (B) - Taken on strength from No.27 Movements Unit, 27 May 1944; missing from operations, 17/18 July 1944 (S/L J.B. Kerr killed). Letter appears on a list of aircraft dated 22 July 1944 (four days after it went missing) - clerical error or tardy updating of records ?

HR195 (P and/or H) - Taken on strength from No.27 Movements Unit, 3 June 1944; to No.43 Group, 29 September 1944; returned to No.418 Squadron, 4 November 1944; damaged in accident, Category AC, 6 November 1944 and sent to No.43 Group; returned to squadron (date uncertain but approximately mid-February 1945). Letter "P" found on lists of aircraft dated 3 August and 31 August 1944; letter "H" carried in ORB, 22 February 1945 to end of hostilities. Sometimes misidentified in ORB as "RS195" (a Lancaster serial).

MM421 (P) - Received from De Havilland, 14 February 1944; to No.54 Movements Unit, 3 May 1944. This movement may have been cancelled, or the aircraft may have been turned around and quickly returned; it was lost on operations, 16 May 1944 (Day Ranger; S/L H.D. Back to HX808 - the crew were (according to Tony Woods' RAF Combats and Casualties lists at:)

http://www.lesbutler.ip3.co.uk/tony/tonywood.htm

on an Intruder sortie to Orlans. In Tony's lists of Luftwaffe claims, there is an entry as follows:

31.07.43 Besatzung [crew] 11./KG 53 Mosquito  N.W. Fl.Pl. Orlans/Bricy: 50-100 m. 02.40 Film C. 2027/I Anerk: Nr. -

KG 53 was a bomber unit - the entry appears to indicate that the Mosquito attempted to pick off the bomber while the latter was landing (altitude only 50 - 100 metres), but was hit by return fire from the German aircraft.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Dear Hank,

I have a picture of my father and the men he trained with at 51 OTU, Cranfield in April 1943. amongst the names my dad wrote under each of them is a navigator - Shepherd, which could well be the man whose aircraft details you seek.

My father Laurie Bush was a navigator with 418 squadron and was posted missing in action on 23/24 Aug 1943 in HJ 773 in an operation also over the Orleans / Chateaudun area.

The other men in the photos are: Pilots:

Squadron Leader Geoffrey C Matheson (my father's pilot)

Squadron Leader Taylor

Charles Scherf,

Harbrecht

Cotter

White

Aldworth

F Sgt H Williams (418 Squadron)

Eyre

Cole

Crossignol ? C Rossignol ?

Rapson

Navigators:

Green

Mulcair

Taylor

Mooney

F Sgt Roger Gurnett (418 Squadron)[Ft Sgt Williams' navigator]

Yates

F/O E T Orringe (605 squadron)

Brown

White

and as above Shepherd.

Hope this of some interest to you and other Mosquito enthusiasts. I should be very interested in any details of Mosquito crash sites in the area.
