Dear researchers,

On 29th August 1941 Sgt Davies, 19 Squadron, was shot down in Spitfire P8255 near the Dutch coast. He was picked from the sea and made POW.

Unfortunately the Fighter Command Losses by Norman Franks doesn't mention his initials and there are too many Davies in the POW list to sort things out.

Perhaps somebody has his initials and servicenumber on file?

Thanks in advance,

Hans Nauta

The Netherlands

Derek Palmer's book on 19 Squadron is equally vague. Taking Ross's PoW list and deleting the Bomber PoW from "Footprints" it leaves the following who others maybe able to elimiate:

Sgt. D. Davies (1480834)D.W. Davies (1215128)

F/Sgt.I.L. Davies (1577425)

W/O C. Davies (947993) C. Davies (1106853) C. Davies (1112746)

D.V. Davies (526022) D.W. Davies (904254) F.W. Davies (1253601) R.L. Davies (1653069)

Hello John,

Thanks for your effort! I%B4ve checked the POW numbers of the 10 mentioned possibilities and the POW number of W/O C. Davies, 1106853 RAF, must have been issued in August 1941.

It's a very thin clue, as he may have been wounded and have been registered at a later time. Anyhow, I've now something more to work from and I'll dig out if he's indeed the pilot of 19 Squadron.

Will post the results on this Board.

Thanks again and best regards,

Hans Nauta

Hello Robby,

Thanks for his forname! How did you manage to retrieve that? I have the same source too, but there are only initials mentioned, not forenames. Or do I have an old edition?

Regards,

Hans Nauta

Hello Hans,

Also used another source - just by memory Ministry of Defence, Personnel Management Agency - years ago.

Best wishes,

Rob

I guess this highlights the big difference between the FCL and the BCL books by not listing a persons initials regardless of however many there are. I'm sure there were many Davies' that served in BC that have their initials listed by Chorley.
