Would anyone out there be able to shed any light on this Airman.

I am told he was killed whilst flying a spitfire, although the squadron was flying mustangs at the time, apparently they reverted back to spitfires for a while and this was during the period he was killed.

He was also apparently the last man killed in action in 249 squadron, the war finishing very shortly after.

He was called Teddy in the squadron and was 22 when he died.

He is buried in Belgrade War Cemetery.

Would anyone out there have any further information?

Yours thankfully

Brett

Brett,

Ramsbotham was flying Spitfire MH980 on an armed recce; attacked a ammo-truck that exploded, later reported a rough running engine; evidently had glycol problems. The whole story can be read in the wonderful book "249 at War" - author Brian Cull.

Regards,

Henk.

Gee, thanks Henk!

I still have a few signed copies of '249 at War' if anyone is interested!

Cheers

Thank you all for that information, if he was flying MH 980 what would the squadron letter have been? am i right in saying 249 SQUADRON was GN? is there any way of finding out his aircraft letter?

Regards

Brett

Hi Brett

I am afraid that I don't have an individual aircraft letter recorded for MH980. There is a picture in '249 at War' of Ted sitting in the cockpit of a Spit IX but no aircraft letter is visible. The Squadron code was, as you state, GN.

Cheers

Brian

Thank you Brian, is there a chance because they were new aircraft to the squadron that they were not yet painted up or issued a letter? or would this have been done as soon as the planes arrived?

Sorry Brett, I can't answer that one!

Perhaps someone else will be able to clarify.

Cheers
