Perhaps the most readily available and most complete source is Stubbs & Stubbs/Unsung Heroes of the RAF - the Far East Prisoners of War. A complete-as-possible nominal roll of the 5,100 odd FEPOWs, in name order, giving names, service no, unit where known, places held, and for the 1/3 (at least 1,714) who did not survive captivity at the hands of the Japanese, their date of death and place of interment or commemoration. Fleshed out with very useful narrative sections, notes on sources, a FEPOW bibliography, index and so on. Used to be available from Barny Books and Tucann (both of whom are now hard to find), or direct from the Stubbs', however, a number of both new and 2nd hand copies are currently listed on that most useful of all book listings, www.bookfinder.com

The alternative is to visit a library and look into an interlibrary loan. Try starting with http://www.peoplesnetwork.gov.uk/

The British Library certainly holds a copy.

For some years, the wonderful Anthea Beckett maintained a good, though incomplete online set of FEPOW rolls under The Java Index title. Of sparkling personality and advanced age, sadly, in recent years Anthea has not been able to continue.

However, though very hard to find and access, The Java Index is still available on line - so here's a complete set of the remaining working links:

Other on line sources for the FEPOWs are

Ron Taylor's remarkable site: Far East Prisoner of War Community

I believe - though I've not checked lately - that Ron Taylor has taken into his FEPOW site a copy of Anthea's rolls. Ron too is a great fellow: whether he is actually updating the rolls I cannot say. His pages are very intricately designed and will repay careful study.

Lastly, for the families of FEPOWS there's Carol Cooper and her group's very comprehensive site:

No rolls as far as I know.

LAST EDITED ON 21-Jun-07 AT 07:16 AM (GMT)[p]For completeness I should add two other more distantly related items.

For Aus Army FEPOWS, the Australian War Memorial site has this online search facility:

AMF Prisoners of War and Missing in the Far East and South West Pacific Islands

http://www.awm.gov.au/awm232/

In the United States of America, Roger Mansell operates this website:

Centre for Research - Allied POWs Under the Japanese

http://www.mansell.com/pow-index.html

This site has richly comprehensive coverage of PoW camps, and the data is organised by camp, with separate Rolls (Rosters, in Roger's terms) of American and Commonwealth servicemen (sometimes separating British, Aus etc) with brief details of name, initials, sometimes with unit and country. Again, a complex site - careful study of the Home page and Camp list will be amply repaid.

Roger too is most helpful and can make his data available on CD on request.

5100 prisoners and 1714 dead: sic! My mistake. There are something over 6,000 RAF names on the Stubbs' FEPOW roll.

5100 is the estimate that appears in Maltby's despatch: Report on Air Operations During the Campaigns in Malaya and Netherlands East Indies Dec 1941-Mar 1942 AVM Sir Paul Maltby KBE CB DSO AFC; London Gazette, Supplement, Feb 1948. This seems to be the number of RAF personnel who fell captive at the fall of the NEI in March 1942 - and apparently reported as 5102 prisoners and 1714 dead in Prisoners and Casualties in the War Against Japan (HMSO CMND 6832 June 1946), repeated in Probert/The Forgotten Air Force. Yet, thanks to the efforts of the Navy, the merchant marine and the Dutch, of the 12,000 RAF men in the NEI it had been possible in the last days to evacuate some 7,000 of them.

These numbers do rather stick in the mind. 1 in 3 of the mainly RAF groundcrew taken captive by the Japanese -most of them in Java- did not survive.

For 211 Squadron, for example, at least 357 personnel were held as prisoners of war by the Imperial Japanese Army. Virtually all the 339 airmen known to have fallen captive in Java were ground crew and at least 184 Squadron members (6 aircrew and 178 groundcrew) died in captivity: more than all the 211 squadron aircrew killed in action during 5 years of armed conflict.

Its a tribute to the tenacity of the Stubbs' that they were able to extend their roll to identify some 6000 RAF POWs in the Far East from a range of sources, including Japanese records.

Hi Don,

That is an excellent response. Would you be willing to make a copy and post it in the Useful Books and Research section for future reference? It would be a shame for it to slip into the background.

Cheers

A

p.s. Brett, if you have problems accessing the Stubbs' book, post any names you want checking. It seems Don has a copy, as do I and I'm sure a number of others here have copies too.

Don

Barney books are still going, link below. I have just obtained a book about Sir Frank Whittle that they recently published in conjunction with some Loughborough Schools as a comemoration project.

Thank you for that. No Unsung Heroes on the Barny Books list now.

The site pops up readily enough in Google, but the new IE default search provided by MSN is still woefully erratic - in what it finds and whether it deigns to find anything at all.

And no Darling or Dorling in Stubbs, or Anthea's rolls.
