LAST EDITED ON 12-Jul-07 AT 02:04 PM (GMT)[p]Hi Tom

Watts is commemorated at Runnymede therefore no known grave.CWGC has his unit as 20 Sqn which makes it a little unusual that he is on Runnymede rather than a Memorial closer to the Burma Theatre where 20 Sqn were operating Hurricanes at the time. This kind of switch of Theatre for Memorial entries is not unknown but then neither is the possibility that the CWGC record has a typo for the unit.Do you have independent info that he was with 20 Sqn and not perhaps 20*?

Just a thought

Dick

Does anyone notice he was a observer, not a pilot so could not be 20 Sqn Hurricane

he must be in 20x sqn

Based on assumption home based.. Prehaps:

201

206

207

Hello all,

CWGC in error, unit was 204 Sqn. Sunderland JM669 crashed into sea off Port Etienne, Senegal.

Crew:

H.L. Beesley - W.H.N. Pearce - E.L. Watts - G.G. Ambler - E.F. Crossman - L.E. Jones - E.W. Lord - A.S. Penney - E.B. Smith - R. Smith.

Ran out of time to check the correct spelling of the names.

Best regards,

Henk.

Hi

CWGC records all of Henk's names as being of 20 Sqn except Crossman ,whose unit is given as 204 Sqn, and Pearce, who doesn't come up at all and therefore could have survived.

Regards

Dick

Thanks Ross for info on Hewett. Was on my "unaccounted" listing but couldn't find a matching Sunderland serial for 201 Sqn.

Henk.

Tom,

Checked RAF Overseas War Deaths 1939-1947

Watts unit listed as 20 Sqn

Also checked the lists against another aircrew casualty who is also listed with the wrong squadron number.

39048 S/L A.E Thompson KIA 7/8/1943 unit is listed as 642 Sqn when it was 142 Sqn ! The Cwgc was changed this to 142 Sqn.
