P/O (Pilot) Raymond E.S. BROWN - 41985, was killed on active service and lies buried in the Grantham Cemetery, Lincolnshire.

Looking for a unit and aircraft serial.

The aircraft could have been:

Hart I - 11 FTS - K6429 - CFL near Derby in the grounds of Kilhangar, Albury, Guildford, Surrey;

Battle I - 1 AAS - K7598 - no further info,

Bombay I - 10 FTS - L5818 - crashed 5 miles NE of Stafford.

Regards and thanks for your help.

Henk.

Hi Henk, it's definitely not the bombay. Pilot was Sgt G E Forde (510882). Aircraft came down at Amerton and was wrecked but pilot survived.

Not sure about the Hart, i don't have anything on that and the ORB records nothing on that date. That doesn't mean it isn't that crash though as i know of a fatality at the unit in October that is not recorded in the ORB either.

Cheers, Tom

Henk,

Re K6429, you have given two locations for the crash, about 200 miles apart! The Hart is 'near Derby'; should the reference to Guildford apply to Hurricane L1937?

As regards to Raymond Brown, his death is registered at Grantham and I can offer as possibility Audax K7489 of 12 FTS.

Regards

DaveW

From "The K File"

K7489 of 12FTS stalled and dived into ground after take-off from Spitalgate on this date, killing the pilot ... could be your man

Thanks Dave, DG and Tom. Crashlocation Guildford indeed was the Hurricane L1937 (read incorrectly from the AB-list 'Crashes in UK'). Also omitted to mention Audax K7489 that's in the AB-list as well for 10-10-1939. (Crashed on take-off at night - crashed Grantham).

Henk.
