"Plt Off Richard A. SANDERS died 23 May 1940"
Possibly one for Henk
Plt Off Richard Atheling Sanders (41872) died 23 May 1940 - I believe he had received burns at sea/or rescued from sea with burns. Mentioned as being with 81 Squadron.

Can you throw any light on this casualty, please?

Thanks in advance
Brian

Hello Brian,
Herewith details of this casualty, shot down on 20 May 1940 while flying with No. 87 Squadron from Merville:

Hurricane. Shot down by Bf110s in combat over base and crashed north-west of Arras 10.00 a.m. Pilot Officer R. A. Sanders badly wounded - died 23 May. Aircraft a write-off.
Richard Atheling Sanders of No.145 Squadron had arrived at Lille-Marcq with a replacement aircraft a few days earlier and stayed to fly operations with No.87 Squadron. Having survived this crash, and an air attack on the ambulance train to Dunkirk, he is believed to have died of injuries aboard the Hospital Ship ’Worthing’ en-route to England.

I have more background if you require it. The Battle of France Then & Now will be published on 15 February 2008 - thanks for all your help.

Thanks Peter - I should have put two and two together! Or read my own book 'Twelve Days in May'!!
I can't really blame AHB even though they did give his unit as 81 Squadron! This was a communications unit at the time.

Can't wait for the new tome to appear. Congrats in advance, I know its going to be the definitive! Will meet up someday for that promised beer! Regards to Anne.

Cheers
Brian

PS: I assume all my material is now with Larry?

Brian,
Definitive ? Well, certainly the best I could make it as of October last. All your material is still here awaiting your advices as to when it would be convenient for us to meet up. I would not pass anything on without prior permission.
