|Details: Two Lysanders were dispatched from Mingaladon to Lashio on VIP duties. Flight Lieutenant Tate with Lt Gen T J Hutton (GOC Burma Army) and Flight Lieutenant Mann with Lt Chancellor took off for Lashio after refueling at He Ho. Flying by night over the wooded terrain of Burma, with very few landmarks, Navigation was very difficult. Both aircraft got lost and ran out of fuel south of Lashio. Flight Lieutenant Tate tried to force land but his aircraft caught fire in the crash. The passenger, Gen Hutton, though suffering from shock and minor injuries, dragged the badly injured pilot out of the burning Lysander. Meanwhile Tate’s wing man, Flight Lieutenant Mann made his passenger bale out. He then followed Flight Lieutenant Tate down and crash landed in the vicinity. In the process the aircraft was wrecked and Mann suffered severe concussion. Sadly Flight Lieutenant Tate died of his injuries on the 8th.. Possible Ids: L4756, L4784, N1262, N1293, P9139|
