Spitfire VB AA920Hi All, I am hoping someone may know where I can find a photograph of Spitfire AA920. The Spitfire had an illustrious career with 72, 124, 71 (Eagle then 334), 222, 167, 322, 1 and 402 squadrons before ending its days in a field whilst with 57 OTU. With it being with so many squadrons there may be a chance of a picture of it somewhere. Many thanks in advance, Russ ....Read More.RussG on 12th February 2008 04:41:09
Spitfire crash - technical helpHi All I am researching the loss of Spitfire VB (clipped wing) AA920 near Longhorsley, Northumberland in April 1945. It basically broke up in mid air while recovering from a dive and had some 923 flying hours under its belt mostly on squadron service. The investigators opinion as to the cause of the crash is that:- "According to Spitfire defect No. 20 - Mark V Spitfire without the inertia weight in the elevator control circuit, have a tendancy to rapid increase in acceleration when recovering from dives and a rearward snatch on the control column. It is considered that the pilot on account of his inexperience on the type was unaware and not ready to counteract this condition". Could anyone perhaps put this in laymans terms.....what would have happened during the dive? I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks again in advance, Russ ....Read More.RussG on 26th February 2008 05:36:04
