F/L Haydn Jones 1 PRU 30.07.42Hi Andy, For Tully I have AB301 Missing on mission to Lubeck. F/O Leahy of Quilpie, Queensland, is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial to the Missing. A group of airwar researchers in Northern Germany has investigated this matter and has come to the conclusion that this Pilot went down with his Spitfire AB301 at 17:30 hrs after having been under attack of a Fw190 fighter of I./JG1. The crash-site was in a quarry in the village of Berensch, about 9 km SW of the town of Cuxhaven, on the North Sea coast. The a/c burned; personnel of the German Air Force Base Nordholz recovered the remains of the pilot and salvaged the a/c. The pilot could not be identified by name, due to the fire, and was buried in the cemetery of Berensch, along the hedge. After the war the body was exhumed by a British MRES team. Airmen who fell in that area were reinterred in Becklingen British War Cemetery near Soltau, and it is believed that the Unknown Airman of Berensch was also buried there. Regards Ross[/QUOTE] Hi Ross, The AB301 loss ties in with F/L Jones, whose objectives in N.W. Germany would have taken him near Cuxhaven. F/O Tully was a member of 'E' Flight at Wick. F/L Haydn Jones 1 PRU 30.07.42Hi Ross, I know that ORBs aren't infallible but I've just had a look through the 1 PRU ORB to double check. The F.541 lists Tully as being in AA800 and Jones in AB301. Also http://spitfires.ukf.net/p016.htm gives AA800 as being lost on a mission to Bergen, which fits with it operating from Wick with Tully as pilot. I can confirm the spitfire he was flying when he went missing 30 July 1942 was indeed AA800. From memory it was a Mk IV converted from a Mk 5 and had about 150 hours on it. I wrote into Flight Magazine a few years ago trying to uncover a little bit about his loss. They said he flew from Wick on a mission to Bergen to photograph flak installations and never returned. That evening about right on the limit of his endurance (from what I calculated based on the Mk IV fuel capacity and gal/hr at cruise) a plane was seen on radar (identified as enemy) over the Orkneys. A flight of spitfires were despatched to intercept but no visual was made and the plane disappeared. The weather had turned quite bad by the time Tully was due to return. A few hours after his scheduled return a Hudson search plane was launched however the weather continued to deteriorate and the search was abandoned after a short time. The weather remained bad for two more days after which no more searches were launched believing they would be pointless. I have a few questions... 1.) Did PRU Spitfires carry IFO equipment around that time and how reliable was it? 2.) Did they also carry a radio and if so is it reasonable to expect Tully, flying in bad weather to use his radio to get a fix bearing to Wick? 3.) How likely would it have been that Tully was observed either visually or on radar while over Bergen? From my research there is no proof that he even made it there. Where would I be able to find these records if they existed? 4.) Where could I find Luftwaffe combat claims for the Bergen area for July 1942? 5.) The Orkneys would have been a considerable distance from German aerodromes... the only planes that I can think of in 1942 that would have had the range are the Ju88 or maybe a long range Me110... are there any others that could have been snooping around there at such great a distance?
