Airacobra AH596Hi Paul I've just had a look on Joe Baugher's website and he notes the following: AH581 crashed after engine failure Nov 21, 1941. AH582 crashed during aerobatics Oct 19, 1941. Pilot killed. AH596 in forced landing at Colchester Sep 29, 1941. We know that Sgt Land was the pilot of AH596 and from your notes that Sgt Sawyer was the pilot of AH581 (but you say 13 December). Who was the pilot of AH582? Cheers Brian ....Read More.brian on 25th September 2008 10:09:56

601 Sqn Pilots 1941Ok looking at the references in Tom Moulson's 'The Flying Sword - The story of 601 Squadron' records on pp113-114: Pilot-Officer Hewitt killed 19.10.41 in AH582 UF-N crashed in grounds of Gwynne Street Chapel, Bedford " Sergeant Land's engine cut on take-off and he crashed through the boundary hedge" This does not seem to be the same accident to Land on 30.9.41 in AH596 at Colchester I would suggest this is maybe 21.11.41 on AH603 which crashed on take off from Duxford Finally, Sawyer incident is probably AH601 which "AH601 suffered irreparable damage on the 12th of December 1941. The pilot of the No. 601 (F) Squadron aircraft experienced an engine failure and landed it on its belly at R.A.F. Station Duxford." - This date would tie in with the death of Sawyer a DAY later on 13th in AH581 ....Read More.paulmcmillan on 29th September 2008 04:42:38
