235 Squadron Loss 15 June 1942Like you, I could find no evidence of 235 Sqn being at Malta in the standard references - Jefford etc. Here is what Shores & Co. (p.311) have to say: Wednesday, 10 June (1942) During Wednesday Malta was to see a sudden increase in its offensive potential, pending an attempt to run major convoys through to the Island. Fifteen Beaufighters of 235 Squadron had been detached from Coastal Command in the United Kingdom and had flown to Gibraltar. Led by the commanding officer, Wg Cdr H J Garlick, a dozen of these set out for the long flight to Malta, all but one arriving safely; X8076 had been lost en route, ditching 20 miles east of Cape Bon. It is uncertain if this aircraft had been intercepted by Bf109s from Sicily or Pantellaria, but Plt Off G R Stead and Sgt J Cockshott were both lost, the latter's body being recovered from the sea. Thursday, 20 August (1942) (p.522) The ships were seen off the toe of Italy early on the 20th by a 69 squadron Spitfire (BR431 flown by Plt Off Colquhoun), and a strike was at once despatched. This comprised ten Beauforts, led by Wg Cdr Gibbs (AW296/B), and a dozen Beaufighters of 227 squadron - a unit newly formed from the survivors of the detachments of 235, 248 and 252 Squadrons still on Malta. Now, what do you make of that? Col. ....Read More.COL BRUGGY on 4th February 2010 08:13:51
