(first name not known) DUFFY - 1348030; Cpl Gerald REECE - 640363, and LAC (Pilot u/t) Thomas P. WATT - 1371023. B - Died on active service: ACW2 Phyllis HICKS - 442668. C - Also looking for the unit of: F/Sgt Thomas HAZELWOOD - 542041, commemorated on Panel 36 of the Runnymede Memorial. (It's possible that he went missing on board HMS 'Stanley'). D - Proposed aircraft losses for this day: Hurricane I - V6876 - 8 FTS - crashed on landing Montrose, Angus. Hurricane I - V7052 - 5 FTS - crashed on take-off Ternhill, Shropshire. Tiger Moth II - R5190 - 22 EFTS - crashed on approach at night near Long Stowe, Cambridgeshire. Master II - AZ245 - 8 FTS - crashed on overshoot Stracathro. 411219 - Unaccounted airwoman and airmen - 19-12-1941Hi Henk, Hotspur II Glider - BT488 DATE: December 19, 1941 TAKE-OFF POINT: Ringway, Manchester CRASH LOCATION: Near Ringway, Manchester AIRCRAFT TYPE & SERIAL: General Aircraft Hotspur Mk II BT488 CREW FATALITIES: Sgt J.V. Rutter, P; Lt D.N. Timms, Obs (both Airborne Forces Establishment); Volunteers – Sgt H. Harrison; Pte H.E. Hornby; Pte L.W. Felton; Pte M. Pilkington; Pte G.M. Keogh – all of the Border Regiment, part of the First Air Landing Brigade PURPOSE OF TEST FLIGHT: The Hotspur, under tow, was undertaking air sickness trials of more than 2hr duration. ACCIDENT DETAIL: After 1½hr, deteriorating weather brought the trials to a close and the Hotspur was released from the tug, instantly climbing steeply, stalling and entering a spin.
