420430 - Unaccounted airmen - 30-4-1942Cheers Dick, I have a note of a No.1443 Flight Wellington, DV442 lost on a training sortie from Harwell. Sgt A L Hayers Ditched 0.5 miles north of South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey, at about 13:50 hrs. APRIL 30TH. - HOLYHEAD, ANGLESEY. A British aeroplane had been reported down in the sea, but nothing was found. - Rewards, £3 18s. 6d. Looks like Roughan also on this aircraft. 420430 - Unaccounted airmen - 30-4-1942Thanks friends. DV442 was known to me; mentioned by Chorley in his vol.8 (HCU's) page 197. Quote: "T/o Harwell for a cross-country sortie, combined with a fuel consumption test. While over the sea at around 1350, an engine failed and Sgt Hayers (A.L.) could not maintain height. Skilfully, he set his aircraft down in the water half-a-mile N of the South Stack (Ynys Law) Lighthouse, 3 miles W of Holyhead Harbour on Anglesey." 420430 - Unaccounted airmen - 30-4-1942Hi Henk, I'm starting to wonder about the crew for DV442. The RNLI record is for a no service which means they did not carry out a rescue but did carry out a search. Form 1180 gives Hayers as pilot and lack of CWGC details suggest he is a survivor. I assumed this was the same for the rest of his crew i.e. saved by means other than the RNLI. I'm now wondering if the two men listed as 15 OTU were also lost with this aircraft. Both No.1443 Flight and No.15 OTU were based at Harwell flying Wellington and I cannot come up with a suitable 15 OTU loss to account for them.
