17 March and 8 May 1943Hello, I would like to have serial numbers of aircraft lost on two actions involving 272 Sqn on these days, and to confirm those I have. On 17 March 1943, 272 Sqn escorted a convoy strike by 39 Sqn. Three RAF losses: _ Beaufighter flown by Sgt Donald Frazee and Sgt Sandery suffered engine failure shortly after start, ditched near Malta, crew saved. Possible serial T5174. _ Beaufighter VI X8132 flown by Sgt Lancelot H Schultz RAAF and Sgt William Ackroyd Wrainwright shot down by German fighters during the attack, both crew killed. _ Beaufort flown by the Flt Lt Donald Ian Fraser RAAF (crew: Sgt M Gonigle, Flt Sgt E Lee and Flt Sgt L Lindsay RCAF) shot down by German fighters during the attack, all crew survived and captured (Gonigle being seriously wounded). No serial known. On 8 May 1943, four Beaufighter of 272 Sqn flew a sweep with bombs from Malta to Cap Bon but were intercepted by Mc 202 and two were lost: _ Beaufighter VI EL274 flown by Sgt Donald Frazee and Sgt John Gilbert Steele was shot down in the sea and blew up, crew killed. _ Beaufighter flown by PLt Off Roland Adelore Cossette and Flt Sgt Arthur William Johnson was hit, radioed for help and tried to retrun to base. Spitfires saw the crew bale out 40 miles from Malta, both were lost. Possible serial X7750. Thanks in advance ....Read More.Laurent Rizzotti on 8th May 2009 01:31:17

X7759 - shot down by MC.202 off Cape Granitola. EL274 - shot down off Granitola. EL529 - crashed in rough sea about 25 miles N of Kalafrana, Malta. For X7759 in my files: P/O (Pilot) Roland A. COSSETTE - RCAF J/17045 (from USA) - Malta Memorial Panel 10 Column 2, and F/Sgt (Nav) Arthur W. JOHNSON - 1338492 - Malta Memorial Panel 7 Column 2. For EL529 in my files: P/O (Pilot) Frederick A.
