Details Engine cut bellylanded in field Bahama. It is with deep regret we record the death of Flt Lt Lou L C Ardern. A formation of eight aircraft were led by Flt Lt A M Robinson on a low level cross country to Kalaikunda. And it was while returning that the tragedy occurred. Smoke was observed to be pouring from the engine of ARderns aircraft and he climbed to about 1200 feet and called the formation leader on R/T saying his engine was packing in and asking if a forced landing was advisable. Plt Offr A L Whiteman who caeme alongside when the smoek was first seen, observed the aircraft to roll over and dive into the middle of a native village from about 1000 feet. While the the position was being fixed, the engine of F Sgt D G Fletchers aircraft, cut while he was changing tanks. He called up on R/T saying he was force landing and carried out a succesful one. He returned to us, unhurt, some hours later. The doc Flt Lt F C Unwin and Fg Offr C F E Fish, EO of 7615 SE carried out a search of the area in jeep and ambulance bringing fletcher back, but no trace of Ardern
