Another one for the Met teamHi Dave, Just a snippet from `Beaufighter Crash Log` by David J.Smith. 8/1/43 2 OTU JL441 1 mile E of Bewholme,Yorks, probably due to pilot forgetting to change tanks. Latter seems to imply he just ran out of fuel regardless of weather conditions, as Dave Smith frequents the board, perhaps he knows more and can add to this post? Regards. Dave. ....Read More.highgroundsman on 25th January 2009 05:20:40

8 Jan 1943 19430108Could add following statement from CWGC re HEPBURN - JL441: Our records confirm the F/O Reginald Lionel Riddy Hepburn has been buried in Stanstead (Crystal Lake) Cemetery, Canada, since November 1943. He was killed on a training exercise near Bewholme, Yorkshire, on the 8th January 1943 and buried in Brandesburton (St.Mary) Churchyard, Yorkshire (UK.996) on 13th January. However, in September 1943 his uncle Lt.Col. (Canon) C.G. Hepburn, a Canadian Forces Chaplain wrote to us requesting that his nephew be exhumed, cremated and this ashes returned to his widowed mother. However, by the time we replied explaining that this would be contrary to the General Order prohibiting the return of Commonwealth military personnel, Canon Hepburn had succeeded in getting a Home Office exhumation license, had the body exhumed and cremated and was on his way back to Canada with the ashes.
