White and P/O Hamilton (Air Gunner) missing. Lysander L4796
I got put off track by the AIR81/419 that listed BAILEE, WALKER for this aircraft http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/details.php?uniq=L4796 Now i realise it is REB white and HAMILTON. Does anyone know what the aircraft for BAILEE and WALKER is? PS: REB White went to India (28 Sqn, Lysanders) - and had the misfortune of force landing in tribal territory while bombing them, and was subsequently lynched to death. ....Read More.Jagan on 21st December 2018 01:09:58

400517 - Unaccounted Airmen - 17-05-1940
FRANCE O'REILLY, John Patrick (Northern Ireland) - Lac - 535507 - RAF - 16 Sqn. Doingt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Lysander I - L4796 - 16 Sqn (?).
There seems to be quite a bit to unpick with this one. According to AIR 27/222/2, L4796 of 16 Sqn was lost on this date with a crew of P/O White and P/O Hamilton 'Tac. R. Sortie in St. QUENTIN area. Aircraft did not return.' AIR 27/222/1: 17 May: P/O R.E.B. White and P/O Hamilton (Air Gunner) missing No mention of LAC O'Reilly. (P/O Hamilton is 76906 P/O Leslie Montagu Hamilton, commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial) There is an AIR 81 file that appears to conflate the loss above with the loss of L4804 the following day

AIR81/419 Corporal E T Baillie and Flying Officer T W Walker: missing presumed dead. Best I can do without access to the AIR 81s themselves. Hope this helps, Jeff ....Read More.RecklessRat on 22nd May 2021 11:16:33
