Details Collided with KW920 and crashed near Covelong. While carrying out practice flying over the sea at 1000Hrs, both collided and crashed into the sea. Fg Offr Coward baled out before his aircraft struck the sea, but although a strong swimmer, failed to make the shore which was two miles away. It is thought he may have been attacked by sharks. It is thought that Flt Sgt J Stephens was in his aircraft when it entered the water. Launches and Catalina aircraft searched in vain. IN the evening, native fisherman handed to S/L G may, the wallet and part of parachute belonging to F/O Coward. A memorial service was later held and wreaths were dropped from the launch near the spot the aircraft collided
