North Weald ORB Aug 1940 Hurricane N2429 or pilot P/O Wicks or Blenheim L1418 please?Hallo Mark, I have nothing on any incident involving Hurricane N2429 around this date, but I have not seen either of the two ORBs mentioned. L1418 'ZK-F' was from 25 Squadron but this was based at Martlesham Heath then and not at North Weald until 1 September 1940. Returning from a night patrol it overturned on landing at its base in the very early hours of August 14th. The crew of two were unhurt; F/O William Alexander Coote Emmett (Pilot) and Sgt. John Bernard McCormack (AG). The Blenheim was a write-off. For the above I used the Form 78 Aircraft History Card for L1418, Warner, 2nd edition (p.270) and the 25 Squadron ORB (online). In the ORB the patrol is recorded in the F.541 part but not the accident ! I did request a copy of the F.1180 Aircraft Accident Card from the RAF Museum but was informed that there was none. Regards, Martin. ....Read More.Martin Gleeson on 24th November 2013 05:46:09
North Weald ORB Aug 1940 Hurricane N2429 or pilot P/O Wicks or Blenheim L1418 please?'The Battle of Britain, Then and Now', page 354, records the loss of 56 Sqdn Hurricane N2429 (US-T) in combat with Me.110's over Sheppey at 4:15 pm on Tuesday, 13/8/40. The Hurricane is believed to have crashed near Seasalter. F/O P.F.M. Davies baled out with severe burns. The first reference I can find in the book to P/O B.J. Wicks, 56 Sqdn, is on page 384. On Saturday, 26/8/40 at 12:30 pm he was shot down in Hurricane V7340, over Canterbury, by a 109. The Hurricane crashed in the River Stour, near Grove Ferry. P/O Wicks baled out and was unhurt. ....Read More.angelsonefive on 25th November 2013 09:35:46
North Weald ORB Aug 1940 Hurricane N2429 or pilot P/O Wicks or Blenheim L1418 please?
Hello Mark, I have nothing on any incident involving Hurricane N2429 around this date, but I have not seen either of the two ORBs mentioned. Regards, Martin.
Hello Martin Agreed, Blenheim L1418 is recorded with 25 Sqn as FA O (3) on A.M.78, a Flying Accident Operational with later Strike Off 23.8.40 and no AM1180 at RAFM. Before Henk died he sent me a printed list from a book and upon checking it gives 14th August 1940 for Blenheim L1418 and 14th August 1940 also agrees with an A.M. Accs ref. According to A.M.78 for Hurricane IB with Merlin III, N2429 was also FA O (3) Flying Accident Operational with the accident date given as 14.8.40, which agrees with an A.M. Accs Merlin Failure ref date, with Cause of the failure blank and also indicates a "765C" [Flying Accident or Forced Landing Not due to Enemy Action] was later issued "2-9-40", so Bryan John "Wicks 40774" was involved in a Flying Accident on 14th August 1940. The Hurricane was apparently collected "23.8.40" and went to "4 MU" "De Hav" on same date per A.M. Form 78. Mark ....Read More.Mark Hood on 15th March 2014 10:39:51
