114 Squadron - Sergeant John Douglas MackayHello, From the bible about the Bristol Blenheim, 2nd edition, by Graham Warrener, page 370 : Blenheim IV V6522 was lost during a training flight for the Cologne power stations raid. She crashed near North Wooton railway station in same circumstances as R3743. Sgt J. McaKay (observer) was killed, pilot Pilot Officer Richmond was injured. No mention of the wireless operator air gunner. R3743 crashed on Marshes near North Wooton, Norfolk, after striking sea on low-level bombing training. F/L Patterson and crew only slightly injured. Both Blenheims belonged to No. 114 Squadron. The unit's Operations Record Book (held at Kew) could give some more details, such as time of take-off, and the names of the crews. A third Blenheim was lost on this training, from No. 139 Squadron : N3627 which caught fire in flight and spun into ground near Matlaske, Norfolk, on low-level bombing training. Sgt J. Gibbs (pilot), Sgt J. Shaw (observer) and Sgt D. Beale (wopag) baled out but Sgt Shaw's parachute did not deploy fully and he too died.
