RAAF Collision June 10, 1938 Air Cadets Barton and BellPaul, Re: "Sam" Balmer. One popular story concerns the day (12-8-1937) Flight Lieutenant John Balmer exited an aircraft in which he had been instructing and parachuted to earth, leaving the cadet pilot* to fly the machine back to Point Cook. Newspapers reported that he had accidentally fallen from the aircraft**, but the story circulated throughout the Air Force that he had jumped to provide an otherwise proficient student with the incentive to apply his skills properly!
