W/O Ernest Bruce Lascelles, 580224 RAFHello, I am looking for details about the death of W/O Ernest Bruce Lascelles, 580224 RAF. As far as I can see, he was lost without trace with a Warwick from 6 OTU on 13/11 1945. He was known to have been the pilot of Hudson N7361, UA-G from 269 Sqn. Survived a shot down into the Gaulosen Fjord (inlet), Norway on a mission 11/6 1940 to Trondheim Harbour, where Scharnhorst, cruisers and several German destroyers were anchored. 451113 - Unaccounted Airwomen & Airmen - 13 - 11 - 1945No problem Malcolm. It was useful to have the Warwick crew actually listed in the newspaper reports. 580224 Ernest Bruce 'Leatherneck' Lascelles was an instructor with 6 Operational Training Unit RAF, and had been a P.o.W. after being shot down in Hudson N7361 UA-G of 269 Sqn on June 12th 1940: Sergeant Lascelles' aircraft on 11th June, 1940, which carried out a bombing attack on the German battleship "Scharnhorst", two cruisers, and several destroyers anchored in the harbour at Trondheim. The attack was carried out in daylight and at extreme range for a Hudson aircraft. We were attacked by a number of enemy fighters and two of the aircraft in my formation were lost. In my opinion, it was probably due to the excellent combat carried out by the aircraft of which Sergeant Lascelles was the pilot that no more of the formation was shot down. It is reported that this N.C.O. on one occasion during the sortie attacked and destroyed an Me. 110 which was preparing to attack another aircraft in the formation. Sergeant Lascelles so skilfully manoeuvred his aircraft that his gunner was able to shoot down an Me. 109 and an Me. 110, thus greatly assisting his comrades in the formation. Finally, with his aircraft on fire, Sergeant Lascelles made a successful landing and was taken prisoner. See here for more info: http://www.unithistories.com/officers/RAF_Decorations.html Regards Simoin ....Read More.wwrsimon on 17th September 2016 07:01:00
POW and Evaders Database WorkAnother one (possibly!) Flt Sgt James Hapburn - WO416 has his D.o.B. as December 27th 1920, at Banffshire, and the Scotland's People website has James Gilbert Hepburn, born at Rathven, birth registered 1921. That would make him 551354 LAC James Gilbert Hepburn, on Hudson N7361 of 269 Sqn: http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/details.php?uniq=N7361 Regards Simon ....Read More.wwrsimon on 28th May 2021 08:58:14
