410908 - Unaccounted airmen - 8-9-1941Moss was flying solo in N7708. September 8th 1941, “1251660 LAC (Cadet) Moss, A. killed in Master aircraft N7708 at Edzell. Machine spun into ground shortly after take off. Accident investigated by W/Cdr Simpson 14th September 1941.” Woolgar was killed in T2228, September 8th 1941, “There was a fatal accident at 0132 hours. No.1021123 Sgt C.W. Woolgar, flying Blenheim IV, appears to have lost control while coming down through cloud, and his aircraft struck the ground near Pocklington with both engines under power. The aircraft was burnt out and Sgt Woolgar killed instantaneously. There were no other occupants.” I don't have anything on Davies. ....Read More.alclark on 10th December 2008 11:58:56

Henk.[/QUOTE] Henk The story on V9573 is as follows (as told by pilot Sgt Gordon Smith who only recently passed away) "There followed a busy but uneventful few months until, on the 8th September, I was asked to take the newly posted Station Medical Officer, F/O Craig on a typical mission. This happened to be simulated dive-bombing attacks on a gun emplacement protecting the oil storage tanks near Stanford-le-Hope on the Thames Estuary in Essex in Lysander IIIA V9573. After pulling up steeply out of the dive the engine went bang at about 100ft and, although I swiftly pointed the nose towards the ground to gain flying speed, the aircraft stalled and we crash landed, fortunately in a flat attitude. I banged my head on the gun sight, again… and we staggered out of the burning wreck. As we were running clear I felt a tug on the arm and the doctor said he had to go back for his hat! I was able to 'dissuade' him before the aircraft exploded a few minutes later. A real baptism of fire for the doctor! My passenger was uninjured, but I then spent fourteen days in the Princess Mary’s RAF Hospital at Halton followed by fourteen days on leave, returning to the squadron on the 11th October on detachment at Hornchurch. This time, no fault found with my flying, and all was well, although it had gone through my mind while I was in hospital for the second time that perhaps flying was not for me!
