Boscombe Down recordsHas anyone looked into the NA files for records from the A&AEE at Boscombe Down? Do they exist? I have a record of the crash of Albemarle I P1368 that occurred there and wondered if there would be any record of what they kind of testing they were doing with the aircraft. The crash itself was covered in an earlier thread and I have my man's service file but it doesn't explain exactly why he was there testing it. The crash occurred on 28 Feb 1942, which was still fairly early in its development, so presumably it was still being tested for use as a bomber, which it was not well suited to. Any ideas anyone? ....Read More.dfuller52 on 17th November 2009 01:41:08
Boscombe Down recordsHi Dave, From, Aircraft for the Royal Air force/Bowyer: The Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle:An Unwanted Aeroplane. Thirteen Albemarles were flying by the end of 1941 and it was believed that 100 would be flying by the end of June 1942. The first six examples were set aside for experimental flying. P1362 flew type trials at A. & A.E.E., P1363 was used at Baginton for general development, P1364 was retained at Hawkesley for trial installation work, P1365 went to A. & A.E.E. for intensive flying, P1368 was used at A. & A.E.E. for performance assessment and P1369 went to R.A.E. Farnborough for trial installation of photographic equipment for the P.R.U. See: Aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Bowyer,Michael J.F. Boscombe Down recordsHi I haven't seen any records about the Albemarle but it is mentioned in a book "The Secret Years" by Tim Mason, ISBN 0 951899 9 5, which covers Flight Testing at Boscombe 1939-1945.P1368 did 62 hrs in 4 weeks during a programme simply described as "Intensive Flying" for which Operational Crews were attached to Boscombe. The programme seemed to confirm much of the criticism voiced by the Test pilots. A 2nd a/c was then also used, P1375, and flew 75 hrs in 5 weeks before itself crashing 6 weeks after P1368. The Roll of Honour records 3 fatalities on P1368 but there is no mention of P1375 so presumably the crash was survived by those on board. Hope this helps Regards Dick ....Read More.Dick on 17th November 2009 02:18:19
