Blenheim P4855 Crash Swaffham, Norfolk April 8, 1940 82 SqnHi there, My father was Joseph Bennett and flew Blenheims. I have his log book in front of me and it bears the number 564534. There is no entry for 8 April 1940 but the previous day the entry states that he flew Blenheim IV P4855 from West Raynham to Watton. I see that one of the crew on 4 April was a Sgt Chapman but the crew is not mentioned for 7 April. The next entry in his log book is for 4 May. The entry on these pages refers to him being a member of B flight 82 Squadron. I'm happy to give whatever other information you may wish. John Bennett
BC Great For some reason I had eliminated 564534 Joseph BENNETT as a possible (he was with 101 Sqn in Oct 1939) but it was good to get the correct info! Blenheim P4855 Crash Swaffham, Norfolk April 8, 1940 82 SqnJohn Thanks very much for posting. I am making a study of RAF parachute incidents up to May 1st Do you known if your father claimed his Caterpillar Club badge for this incident. The Blenheim was very difficult to bale out for anyone other than the pilot and observer (one escape hatch above the cockpit) the second in front of the fin, especially as there were 4 crew in total on this flight (rather than the standard 3). This is what I have on the incident in the file 82 Sqn Blenheim IV, UX- ? T/O Watton and at approximately 1045 emerged from cloud, in a dive, and crashed near a dummy airfield at Hillborough, 5 miles South of Swaffham. Pilot Sgt Bennett managed to bale out. Sgt Ian Nairne Murdoch #580576 (Obs), Sgt George Chapman #580942 (Obs. U/T.) and AC2 John William Kempton #629791 (W. Op./Air Gnr.) all killed -- Sgt Ian Murdoch from Inverness -- 564534 Joseph BENNETT 101 Sqn Oct 1939 ORB 82 Sqn: WATTON 8/4/40. Local flying carried out. Blenheim P4855 (Sgt Bennett, pilot) crashed. Pilot descended by parachute. Crew - Sgt Murdoch, Sgt Chapman , AC Kempton killed in crash. Aircraft observed by witnesses to dive vertically out of cloud and crash in trees near dummy aerodrome at Hillborough. The aircraft crashed at Cockley Cley and some pieces of the aircraft were recovered a few years ago Your father was very lucky in that he was not wearing a seat harness and fell out through the cockpit hatch as the plane went inverted. The gap in the logbook (of around a month) is probably due to the fact he baled over quite low and was injured as a result. Your father was commissioned in September 1943 from Warrant Officer. The incident is mentioned in the book The Squadron That Died Twice - The story of No. 82 Squadron RAF, which in 1940 lost 23 out of 24 aircraft in two bombing raids By Gordon Thorburn You can see the entry here https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=W5vlCQAAQBAJ&pg=PT11&lpg=PT11&dq=82+squadron++andover&source=bl&ots=YJis74wxU1&sig=LD6j0IKzw7y1gJyFKnxsTTMXRA4&hl=en&sa=X&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=Watton&f=false Paul ....Read More.paulmcmillan on 7th November 2016 10:59:50
