|Spitfire P8439||I have seen a photo of Spitfire IIa P8439 that was shot down by flak on August 28, 1941 when flown by F/Lt Cunningham of 19 squadron.
It is generally accepted that P8439 was the presentation Spitfire "Crosby I"
However, painted on the nose of the Spitfire in the photo is the script "West Godavari".
From Henry Boot’s “Gifts of War” I note that “West Godavari” does not have any record as to which Spitfire this name was applied, but was requested by the Madras Governor's War Fund to be applied to an aircraft of 234 sqdn.
P8439 was previously used by 234 squadron, hence "West Godavari" appearing on the 19 squadron Spitfire.
Spitfire P8439 is shown in the 19 squadron ORB as flown by Cunningham on 4 occasions in August 1941, but does not appear after August 28, 1941.
From this I deduce that P8439 was actually "West Godavari", but then what was the serial number "Crosby I" ?
Answers on a postcard.....

|Spitfire P8439||Hello Ian,
From AB's Serial number book P1000 to R9999.
P8439 = Crosby I
P8440 = Crosby II
So perhaps after original nameing of P8439 as "Crosby I" she was renamed "West Godavari" while with 234 Sqdn, then passed on to 19 with perhaps both names still applied ?
