Spitfire R6629, 'lost' 29 August 1940.The Spitfire production list has Sgt Manton of 610 Sqdn being shot down by a 110 over Mayfield on 29/8/40, in Spitfire P9433. The aircraft went to AST for repair and was thereafter issued to various units before being declared Cat. E on 15/10/44. ....Read More.angelsonefive on 21st October 2012 10:30:34
Spitfire R6629, 'lost' 29 August 1940.I have P9433 to 610Sqdn as "DW-E" (replacing R6629) from Sept 9 1940. It later served with 131 sqdn, 52 and 57 OTUs before being passed to the Navy. AB serial number book also confirms this. Ian ....Read More.ian94avenge on 22nd October 2012 05:28:38
Spitfire R6629, 'lost' 29 August 1940.Hallo 'Angels 15' and Ian, The problem with the 610 Squadron ORB - for the BoB at least - is that the F.540 does not have a record of combats (or standard narrative) while the F.541 looks good but is riddled with errors. It appears that originally only the aircraft letters were recorded and the serial numbers to go with these added in much later, perhaps a month or more. This meant the current serial on the Spitfire of a particular letter was used retrospectively, when the original might already have been lost, damaged or transferred out. I believe therefore P9433 was recorded during August 1940 in error for R6629. Matters are not helped by the compilers of the otherwise excellent 'AEROMILITARIA' series on Spitfire Is recording an earlier period of service with 610 Squadron, undated but up to 29.8.40 when possibly damaged. It seems to me this has been extracted from the F.541 and incorrectly interpreted. I believe the date quoted by Ian as TOC by 610 Squadron is the correct one (9.9.40). I do not have the F.78 for either aircraft unfortunately. Martin. ....Read More.Martin Gleeson on 22nd October 2012 06:17:02
