F/Sgt John George Lawrence Hughes - 948182 - 26 Sqd - Died 22/7/44Just to add to DaveW's post from "On this day 2 pairs of Spitfire Vb's of 'B' flt took off from Lee-on-Solent on a training pairs and deflection exercise, The first pair consisted of F/L Harold William Adams RAF(VR) 118559 age 23 from Belfast,NI in Spitfire W3314 and F/L Bernard Lees GM RAF(VR) 125534 age 26 from Norwich in Spitfire AA850. The second pair followed being F/Sgt John Geoffrey Lawrence Hughes RAF(VR) 948182 age 22 from East Hazeldean in Spitfire BL638 and F/L John Geoffrey Bertram Hartley RAF 44134. The first pair engaged F/Sgt Hughes in an unauthorised attack who along with F/L Hartley turned to port, but W3314 and AA850 collided with BL638. F/L Hartley witnessed an a/c going down with part of its wing missing and two more a/c burning on the ground. All three pilots were killed and their Spitfires burnt out (Cat E) near Old Alresford,Hampshire. The subsequent inquiry found that a general state of bad flying discipline was the cause but F/Sgt Hughes was cleared of all blame. So ended a sad episode in the story of 26 sqn. Sgt N Peiris. 130 sqn, Ballhalbert. NI.Hello everyone, You are my last hope to ID Sgt N Peiris. He was with 130 sqn 'A' Flt at Ballyhalbert, NI, in June, 1943, most of the peroid flying Spitfire Vb, W3314, PJ-F. His name possibly suggests he was from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), or could it be Free French? I have no service number or first name. Any help on this pilot would be gratefully received, Thanks Roy ....Read More.Roy Nixon on 17th November 2008 09:42:40

26 sqn triple loss, 22-7-44.Hello again, On 22-7-44 3 Spitfire pilots of 26 sqn, B Flt were killed in a single incident near Old Alresford. 3 pair of Spitfires were on formation flying and tail chase. Two of these pairs were engaging each other in air combat when 3 a/c collided in mid air on break. F/Lt Hartley saw one Spitfire going down with part of the wing off and 2 more on the ground burning. These pilots were F/lt Harold William Adams VR118559 from Belfast in Spitfire Vb, W3314, F/Sgt John George Lawrence Hughes VR948182 from East Hazel Dean was in BL638 and F/Lt Bernard Lees GM, VR125534 from Clapton, London in AA850. The Court of Inquiry blamed 'General state of bad flying discipline' but exhonorated F/Sgt JGL Hughes. What I am trying to find is which units did these pilots fly on before 26 sqn with possible dates, I have drawn a blank with all three men but did find that Bernard Lees was awarded the GM while in the Metropolitan Police force in 1940. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Roy ....Read More.Roy Nixon on 20th March 2011 05:07:04
