Details SD by Jap Fighters Cr L 60m E of Pegu. 2k AG surv. Salween area . BRETT – (Sergeant); Service Number – RNZAF WALKER A G Sgt 627807 with slight injuries. Operational flight in the area of Salween , crashed about 4pm. prsumed enemy action. Originally believed to have been shot down on 15 March, later corrected to 4th March. Flying low level attacked by enemy fighters. hit by bullet. Plane crashed west sitaung river 60m E Jegu Burma. One Survivor Sgt Walker.. found Sgt Brett 50 yards from aircraft with head smashed in dead. Lee was dead with bullet in hand. hearing artillery fire, Sgt walker started walking west, regained british lines after two days. [ORB} The formation was flying approx 1500 feet when attacked by enemy fighters believed to be the navy O type. Flt Lt Lee left formation and dived to ultra low level to escape but was attacked by four enemy ac, three astern and one from front. The pilot was hit by a bullet and the aircraft crashed west of the SITTNG river, and 60 miles east of PEGU. The Gunner Sgt Walker climbed out and thepilot attempted to do the same but was sfatally shot and fell back in the cockpit wchich was by then afire. The gunner attempted to pull Flt Lt Lee out of the cockpit thinking he was wounded. but later found shot in the head and realised it was fatal. Helookced for Sgt Brett the observer and found him 50 yards form the nose of the aircraft with his head smashed in. Sgt walker was then obliged to shelter under the sail of the aircraft while the enemy fighters made four streafing attacks. The aircraft was completely burnt out
