Sgt. G P. Turner RAAF 09/11/1942Peter, The link kindly provided by Linzee, is to Turner's A9301 Personnel File. It will tell you little on how Turner lost his life. Turner has no A705 Casualty File at the NAA. Fortunately, there are two excellent secondary sources which will provide all that you require. A. Mon 9 Nov 1942 COASTAL COMMAND Search for missing 179 Squadron Wellington 612 Squadron, RAF (Wick, Caithness-shire - 18 Group) Whitely VII Z9376 - took off at 0650 and while flying through a front at 0904, crashed into a hill at 1800 feet on the Faeroe Islands at Nakkur (position 6134N:0655W). Four of the crew were killed in the crash while the captain died in hospital of his injuries the following day. All five are buried at Midvaag on the island of Vaago. An RAF sergeant was the sole survivor of the accident, which was thought to have occurred when Z9376 veered off track due to magnetic disturbance in the area, the restricted visibility preventing the crew from seeing the hill in time. Captain: NZ401272 Fg Off Harold George HAEUSLER, RNZAF - Age 24. 641hrs. 57th op. The CWGC register gives the 9th as date of death for all those who died, although contemporary documents clearly record that Haeusler did not die until the 10th. See: For Your Tommorow: A Record of New Zealanders who have Died while Serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915. Volume One: Fates 1915 - 1942. Martyn,Errol W. Christchurch:Volplane Press,1998 pp.267-8 B. The other source is too lengthy to transcribe, but provides information on the full crew, and identifies the sole survivor.
