8 Feb 1942Malcom, Re: Lawrie. Sun 8 Feb 1942 FIGHTER COMMAND Formation flight 60 Operational Training Unit, RAF (East Fortune, East Lothian - 81 Group) Defiant I N1705 - took off piloted by Sgt T Lawrence, RAF, but shortly afterwards the weather deteriorated. Later the pilot reported over the r/t that he had 'hit something' while flying in cloud. Although a wing was badly damaged he indicated he could still maintain some control over the aircraft. However, on approach to base at 1300 control was lost and the Defiant rolled at low altitude, crashed and caught fire near North Berwick, 3 and a half miles north of East Fortune. The two crew are buried at Haddington. Air Gunner: NZ403607 Sgt Andrew LAWRIE, RNZAF - Age 21. 53hrs. 32 Sqn Pilots 1931 to 1936 (Bulldog)Hi Paul, Pre-WWII is not my specific area of focus, although I do have partial information relating to Australians serving in the RAF during this period. Generally you will find that most Australians serving in the RAF pre-1939 would have been involved in the Short Service Commission scheme (there were some exceptions). SSC aircrew were graduates from the RAAF’s training school at Point Cook, near Melbourne Victoria. The scheme was intended to provide pilots with advanced training and expertise that could then be brought back to the RAAF when they returned. In many cases this did not occur. From Jefford’s RAF Squadron book I believe the following RAF units were equipped with the Bulldog II - 3, 17, 19, 23, 29, 32, 41, 54, 56, 111. I have the following Australians connected to these units pre-war, however, have not checked whether the dates fall within the period of Bulldog operations. Short Service Commission (ex-RAAF) William Wallace Evan Olivier (RAF.34062) 17 Sqn RAF Wallace Cowling Williams (RAF.39010) 17 Sqn RAF (1936) Donald Harry Hunter (RAF.40051) 17 Sqn RAF (1937) Allister William Stewart Matheson (RAF.29258) 19 Sqn (1931) Alan Francis Bandidt (RAF.34209) 23 Sqn RAF (1934) Ronald Beresford Lees (RAF.29257) 29 Sqn RAF Charles Horace Fry (RAF.40047) 32 Sqn RAF Grosvenor Selk (u/k service number) 32 Sqn (1927) Harold Berkeley Hurley (RAF.34096) 32 Sqn RAF (1933) Alfred John Draper (RAF.32139) 54 Sqn RAF (1932) Walter Bruce Skinner (RAF.40062) 111 Sqn RAF Peter Edward Campbell Strahan (RAF.36154) 111 Sqn RAF Other Australians Stanley MacDonald Wickham (RAF.40773) 3 Sqn RAF Anthony Lauderdale Paxton (RAF.04161) 23 Sqn RAF (1931) Victor Thomas Lawrence Wood (RAF.39921) 23 Sqn RAF William Hart Kyle (RAF.26141) 17 Sqn RAF (1931) Colin Campbell McMullen (RAF.32118) 32 Sqn RAF I am sure the above is not a definitive list. If you have squadron rosters for the Bulldog units I would be happy to cross check with any other names. Regards, Drew ....Read More.AUS on 26th June 2019 09:56:10
