Lancasters ME717 24/4/44 & ME795 21/6/44 630 squadronStuart, Sgt Wiliam Davies was the sole survivor in this traumatic incident, earlier in 1944: 20-21 Feb 1944 No.630 Sqn Lancaster III ND563:LE- Op: Stuttgart T/o 2340 East Kirkby but swung out of control and after crashing through the boundary fence ran over the Stickney road and lost its undercarriage. Moments later, the bomb load exploded. P/O Murray and Sgt Walley rest in Cambridge City Cemetery, while Sgt Remole RCAF lies in Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery. Sgt Davies was not badly hurt. P/O E J Murray + Sgt F Westhead + Sgt P G Mottram + F/O H K Battye + Sgt K J Wallbey + Sgt D W Remole RCAF + Sgt W Davies - Injured BCL5/96 Would take some fortitude to get back in a rear turret after such an event.
