|Flight Lieutenant John Francis Tufnell Barrett DSO Awarded 3rd April 1928||Hi Paul I don't have a really clear picture of his service, but I have some info. His name was Philip Harry Perkins and he joined the RFC I don't have a date, though one record shows he was in 116 Sqn 03.04 1918. The earliest photos I believe he took were at Netheravon of crashes in 1918, stating who had the crashes and who survived, rather grim...also aerial photos of Tidworth, it has in the top right hand corner 7.D.3536 Tidworth G8.d 184.108.40.206 Also a picture of Kronstadt in 1919 I know he got out and went to UCL. He was in the medical unit Bexhill in 1922, at Seaford Camp in 1923 and Worthy Down in 1926, going by the first album The second album then jumps to troops embarking on the Dorsetshire leaving Southampton 20 Sep 1927. Next are pictures of friends in Shaibah. He has named most of them that's how I knew Fergy Barrett DSO DFC, Richard Kellett, a picture of him just after he had been shot down by Achwans(grandad spells it Akhwans)and surviving. A picture of Steve Hardy as a F/O who became Commandant of the Officers Advanced Training School Cranwell in March 1944.. He was still in Shaiba in Nov 1927, great pictures of the Sheik of Koweits (grandads spelling) visit including Captain Lancaster, who's petrified body was to be found years later in the Sahara (1962) He disappeared in April 1933 whilst trying to beat Amy Johnsons record flight to the Cape. Sorry digressed there, there is a lot of info in these albums, hence wanting to have them re bound. Just had a bit of a shock though, first quote £600..!! Gruesome pictures of victims of a raid by Achwans in Nov 1927, one grandad describes as 'this Arab had the top of his head cut clean off a sword blow from the Akhwans' He is still there in 1928, there is a picture of RAF General Hospital Hinaidi, I am confused whether he was flying whilst he was there or if he was a medical officer. He carried on in the RAF and became an SMO his last posting was RAF St Athans. I know he was in Egypt in 1936 as my father was born there. Dad died a while ago so I don't have a great deal more info currently. I think he eventually left in the late fifties. I really must ask for his records then I would have a clearer picture... I am interested to know your interest in Group Capt Barrett. Kind regards Sian [QUOTE=paulmcmillan;126838]Sian Many thanks for posting the info that your grandfather wrote out of interest can you post some details about your grandfather?
