|Oxford MP 466 RAF Kidlington||During research into my father’s war I found the following in the Operation Record of 214 Squadron, RAF Stradishall ‘Four Wellington aircraft of the Reserve Squadron took off between 0013 and 0027 hours B.S.T. to proceed in accordance with No. 3 Group Headquarters Operations Instructions Nos. 40 and 44. The aircraft numbers were R 1246, R 1249, R 1251 and R 1250 and the pilots were respectively F/0 Collins, P/O Cranswick, P/O Day and F/OBrain. Two of the aircraft arrived safely at Malta at 0901 and 0926 hours B.S.T. The remaining two machines did not arrive there; F/O Collins and F/0 Brain were the pilots of the missing aircraft. I contacted The Air Historical Branch (RAF) of the Ministry of Defence who provided the following information On 9 December 1940, at 0013hrs BST Wellington Bomber Mark 1c serial number R1246 (H) took off en-route to the Middle East, first stop Malta. They were due to join No. 70 Squadron RAF, which was based in Kabrit, Egypt. Wellington R1246 hit a barrage balloon cable near Paris and crashed at approximately 0400hrs at Somery, 6 km from Forges-les-Eaux; all members of the crew escaped by parachute. All of the crew were captured within 12 hours of the crash’ Flying Officer J W Collins – Pilot Flight Sergeant F J W Steele - 2nd Pilot Pilot Officer P F Walker - Navigator Sergeant R Ayre - Wireless Operator/Air Gunner J A Hounslow - Mid Upper Gunner Sergeant J F Coombs RNZAF - Rear Gunner I managed to track what happened to all the crew but was confused to find the pilot now promoted to Flight Lieutenant, but listed as pupil pilot, had unfortunately died on active service on 28th February 1945 and was buried in the military section of the Oxford (Botley). Through further correspondence with AHB they confirmed my father’s pilot was Flying Officer John Wyndham Collins, Service No 40495, he was captured but later repatriated and was the pupil pilot killed whilst flying in the Oxford aircraft. ....Read More.||albertess on 28th January 2014 12:19:29|
