Flt Lt John Stewart PUGH DFCPUGH, John Stewart, F/L (120329, RAFVR*) - No.149 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 21 September 1945. Citation in Air Ministry Bulletin 19736. "This officer has a long record of operational flying and has nearly completed three tours of operational duty. 547 Sqn - Liberator VI EV996 - 6-12-1944Hi, I am John Owens, son of James Charles Owens & cousin of Ross Simpson. My understanding is that John Stewart received his DFC as a result of saving the aircraft after it was hit by shell fire from the u-boats they were attacking on the 14th February 1945. My mother has a very small newspaper clipping that records that the plane was hit "in more than 30 places". My mother also has a copy of Vincent Ball's book titled 'Buck Jones, Where Are You?' Vincent was one of the crew on the plane & his book was published by Random House in 1996 with the ISBN 0 09 183262 4. The action that took place on the 14th February 1945 is described on pages 203 - 208. If you cannot find a copy of the book I will be in London from mid-September (2011) for a few weeks & can bring a copy with me. My father's injury occurred on the 6th December 1944 when the bomb exploded on the plane. He spent about 6 months recovering in hospital then returned to Australia. I hope that this info is of assistance. Kind regards, John Owens ....Read More.Johno on 21st August 2011 04:58:55

Awards - Non-RCAF in RCAF unitsThe Air Force Association of Canada has carried (among other things) awards to RAF, RAAF and RNZAF personnel who were decorated for wartime services in Canada (as flying instructors, for example). To this has been added data on RAF, RAAF, RNZAF and some USAAF personnel who were decorated for service in RCAF units overseas. This material will be available using the following procedure: Visit the main Air Force Association website (http://airforce.ca/honours-awards/military-honours-awards Click on SEARCH TOOLS Enter a name you seek AND check off the appropriate group - in this case, "Commonweakth Air Forces Serving in RCAF during WWW II." A list of persons so entered appears below. FAA in home waters October 1941FAA in home waters October 1941 1 - ROC I - 772 Sqn - L3073 S/Lt. JWT Cooper RNZN & LA. J Stewart, both killed. 2 - Walrus I - 751 Sqn - W2753. S/Lt. DE Smith, killed. 9 - Sea Hurricane I - 804 Sqn. S/Lt. NRM Sutcliffe-Hatfield, OK. 12 - Albacore I - 817 Sqn - N4358. Lt. EH Archer & LA. WM James, both killed. 16 - Hurricane I - 759 Sqn - V7675. S/Lt. AC Scott, killed. 17 - Swordfish I - 767 Sqn - L2825. S/Lt. SJ Carpenter, DoI, 20/10/41. 22 - Seafire In - 761 Sqn - PA128 Pilot name ? I have doubts about this "loss". The only Loss that I could find is that of AC2c JG Savin RAFVR, who is recorded in CWGC as being a 797 Sqn airman. See the "Unaccounted Airman " thread for 22/10/41. I understand the Savin must have been in an RAF Regiment numbered 797 ( which I understand later became 2797 ? The second thing is that of a/c PA128 . As far as I have found ( and I may be wrong ?) is that Spitfire VB serial number AD252 was converted and became PA128. So the a/c in 1941 would have been AD252. See Air Brit and "Spifire the history". From what I understand AD252 would have been with 611 Sqn RAF on the 22/10/41. "38 MU 17/09/41 - 611 Sqn 25/09/41 - 64 Sqn 14/11/41 - AST H, 21/03/42 - Converted to Seafire 1b and renumbered as PA128 in June 1943". And "PA-PZ" has AD252 - 611/64/611 - to Seafire PA128 6.43. So are we looking for a 611 Sqn loss ? There were four(?) on the previous day. 23 - Fulmar II - 800 Sqn - X8645. S/Lt. JH Milk & S/Lt. FJ Stamper, both killed. 23 - Albacore I - 832 Sqn - N4253 (?) - Henk's number Y0014. S/Lt. RJ Brown & LA. N Weldon, both OK. But - N4253, engine failure, force landed in sea, Cat Z, 5/8/41 SLt. RJ Brown & LA. N Weldon both OK. Henk's Y0014 for the 23/10/41 has crew listed as -S/Lt. PD Sayer, S/Lt. AK Hopkins & LA. N Weldon, all killed. The connection is LA. N Weldon, but is it the same a/c N4253 on both occasions ? 27 - Proctor Ia - 758 Sqn - P6064. MiD. DM Jones & NA2. AG Davis, both killed. 30 - Proctor Is - 756 Sqn - P6060. S/Lt. P Fahrenholtz, killed. A/c collided with K5650. 30 - Shark II - 780 Sqn - K5650. S/Lt. JE Hampson, OK(?). A/c collided with P6060. Halifax W1245 78 Squadron FTR 11/12 Aug 1942Please can anybody help me with 2 crew of this 78 Sqdn Halifax (P/O (DA Kingston was pilot) who ended up as POW's after they were shot down in Belgium by a night fighter. I have full details of the 5 men killed so I don't need info about them. It is confusing as the ORB does not even mention Stewart in the crew and details only 6 men. I believe that R/70732 Sergt RG Kendall RCAF (Rear Gunner) was taken prisoner and I found him as POW 25646 at Stalag 344 Lamsdorf but in Clutton-Brock the Bomb Aimer Sergt J Stewart is simply listed as NK (Not Known) for the POW number and camp, but somewhere else I have found a reference POW No. 687, Stalag Luft 7 Barth, I dont know where that has come from. I think Stewart was wounded by gunfire from the nightfighter possibly Kendall as well. I'd like to confirm the first names of both men and anything to confirm cause of loss and if they were wounded. I have several volumes of a book called "Belgie im Oorlog" or something similar but not the volume covering Aug 1942, can anybody help me out with a scan from that please. Any help is appreciated, thanks PeteS ....Read More.PeteS on 7th October 2019 09:35:27
Halifax W1245 78 Squadron FTR 11/12 Aug 1942PeteS Sergeant J Stewart has been a puzzle to me for nearly 20 years. He was the Bomb Aimer in the crew and did survive and was taken POW. He is missing from both the Squadron and the Station ORBs for the night in question and I can only assume that this is because of a clerical error on the Squadron which was then transposed by the Station clerks. It was a bad night for 78 Squadron as there were 4 crews lost that night. Sadly the Squadron ORBs for 1942 do not give details of airmen movements e.g. postings in and out etc so I can't be specific about the date he arrived on the Squadron. I'll go through some stuff that I have which may shed some light on things. As far as Sgt Kendall is concerned you have the right man, he is indeed Richard Geoffrey Kendall.
