P/O Davies, Frederick Shayler - 1832986 - Died 5/7/47 - 201 SqdHallo all, just to add to what Dennis and Amrit have written. Base (for the exercise): Castle Archdale Sunderland PP113 / 'F' Crash location: "Off N. coast of Ireland" There was a crew of 10 plus 2 passengers (Rideout and Williams), of which 6 crew and 1 passenger died while 4 crew and 1 passenger survived. The survivors were; Sig. II Greer F/Lt. Dolphin F/Lt. Welsh Eng. II Simpson Lt. Williams, Royal Navy (passenger). The crew were carrying out a simulated depth charge attack on the submarine HMS Sentinel when their aircraft ditched in the sea. The submarine crew were praised for bravely rescuing the survivors from heavy seas. All details from the 201 Sqn. ORB (AIR 27 / 2456 ). I was told by the RAF Museum earlier this year that, surprisingly, they have no Form 1180 Aircraft Accident Report for this loss. By the way does anyone have the Christian names of the survivors ? Transcribed for the recordIn the course of transcribing wartime and immediate postwar citations I have kept texts for recommendations which ultimately were not approved. Nevertheless, the people involved had clearly made enough of a contribution that they were recommended, even if a gong did not materialize. Such information may still be of interest to persons consulting this site. Time does not permit me spelling out all the abbriviations of units, but I am sure that most reseachers will be looking by name rather than unit. Some of the following awards may indeed have been approved (for example, the AFC proposed for Major Charles Allen, USAAF), as well as other awards to non-British/Commonwealth nationals. The format is fairly straightforward - "BEM rec" means a recommendation for a British Empire Medal, "OBE rec" a submission for an OBE. This is an ungoing project, but if I wait until it is "finished" or "almost finished", none of it will appear. W/C Le Poer-Trench 31 SFTSFrom a very old thread on the GWF Forum: (posted by Dolphin Nov 20 2004) Some forty years ago I had the privilege of meeting an elderly gentleman named le Poer Trench who had been a SPAD VII pilot in No 23 Sqn RFC; he was very proud of his RFC service, and I remember his RFC tie. I think that he may have been Charles Frederick le Poer Trench, who died in Sydney in 1974. From memory, he told me that he had previously served as a subaltern in the Sherwood Foresters. I just tried to confirm this in the on-line records of the London Gazette, but the Gazette site doesn't seem to be feeling well at the moment - it won't recall pages. I do remember that Mr le Poer Trench said that he had been posted back to the UK after a period of flying on the Western Front, and that he was to return to France as a flight commander in a Sopwith Salamander squadron in 1919, but it didn't happen due to the Armistice. He remained in the RAF after the War, and served in Canada during the 1939-1945 War. He gave me a copy of the 1937 RAF Pocket Book, that I still have. Another memory is his telling me that SPAD pilots could always be distinguished by their singed gauntlets. The exhausts of both the S. VII and S.XIII extended past the cockpit, and pilots used to warm their hands by grabbing the warm exhausts. The mention of "..serving in Canada during the 1939-1945 War..." may be connected? No mention of Military Police or Retrievers though! ....Read More.KevinW4 on 8th January 2010 07:05:22

Out of curiosityDuring the war, those aircrew who were declared LMF would have their rank and wings/brevet removed, often in public, i.e. in front of the entire Squadron on parade. The individuals would be reduced to AC2 and were often employed in menial tasks and were quickly moved off the Squadron. In modern times I have seen ex RAF personnel who have moved to the Army wearing their RAF wings; I know of one ex pilot who left the RAF to fly for Qantas and joined the TA as a Forward Air Controller and was commissioned into the Yeomanry but still wore his RAF wings, I've also seen an ex RN Submariner who transfered to the Army wearing his dolphins. ....Read More.78SqnHistory on 6th May 2012 01:31:27
