"Flg. Off. Colin R. Jarred"
I am seeking some details on the following officer:

JARRED, Colin Robert, 67102, RAFVR
LAC (No. 1165646), date?
com. Prob. Plt. Off., 19 May 1941
616 Sqdn., Tangmere, date?
41 Sqdn., 29 Aug. 1941
Flg. Off. (WS), 19 May 1942

Jarred was killed on 18 June 1942, aged 27. He was the son of Robert & Mary A. Jarred of Dereham, Norfolk, and is buried in Plot 1, Cons. Grave 217, of East Dereham Cemetery, Norfolk.

The CWGC entry does not indicate which squadron Jarred was with when he died, so he is not listed as a 41 Sqdn. casualty. However, I believe he was no longer with 41 at this time.

Can anyone tell me which squadron Jarred was serving with when he died, please, and perhaps where and how his death occurred? Any additional data would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

According to this site:

http://www.supermarine-spitfire.co.uk/testpilots.html

there was a C.R. Jarred who was a test pilot at Vickers.

Same man? Could he have been killed as a test pilot?

/John

Hi Steve

John would appear to have ID'd your man.

From UK Flight Testing Accidents 1940-1971 by Derek Collier Webb:
18Jun42 Spitfire IV BR643 - F/O C.R. Jarred, Production Test Pilot, attached to Vickers Supermarine, Henley. On production test flight engine failed in flight. Attempting a forced landing, collided with trees and crashed at Gates House Farm, Lurgashall, near Midhurst, Sussex, and caught fire. Pilot killed.

An excellant reference which helped me ID a number of pilots who like this chap been killed, whilst not serving in an operational unit.

Kind regards
Pierre

Hi Steve

Sadly nothing in these instances. Guess we need someone to do a book on losses other than BCL, FCL and CCL to fill in all these gaps, or preferably release the personnel records!

Regrads
Pierre

Hi Pierre
Thanks for checking for me; I appreciate it.
Yes, I also wish they would release the personnel records. Although quite obviously a massive task, they have already long since released the records up to and including WWII in Australia, so I hope they will start in this direction soon at the NA, too.
Regards
Steve

Steve

Jarred's NCO number 1165646, I believe would mean he enlisted around June 1940.
